Piraeus Port Awarded ISO Certifications at Posidonia

On Wednesday at the Posidonia conference in Athens, Lloyd's Register presented the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certifications for management and environmental quality.

“We are delighted to make this presentation, acknowledging PPA’s commitment to quality and the environment. This is a matter of increasing importance and it is particularly appropriate to be highlighting good work in this area during a week that marks both World Environment Day and World Ocean Day," said Nick Brown, LR's marine and offshore director.

Piraeus has long been certified under the European Sea Ports Organisation's "EcoPorts" environmental management standard, which is independently assessed by LR. The port's cruise, ferry and ro/ro operations previously held ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 certifications, and the new certification from LR covers these services, in addition to Piraeus' container terminal, its logistics center and its port construction and maintenance projects.

“The port of Piraeus has included in its Strategic Planning the certification of the provided services and the protection of the environment," said Capt. Weng Lin, PPA's deputy CEO. "PPA invests in management systems applied worldwide aiming at continuous improvement of its services.”

The Port of Piraeus has been run by the PPA for nearly 90 years. The agency became a limited company in 1999, and in 2016, state-owned China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (or COSCO Group) acquired a 51 percent stake in PPA for $330 million. COSCO, China's largest shipping conglomerate, holds the option to purchase 16 percent more over five years for an additional $100 million. The agreement includes a commitment by COSCO to invest more than $400 million over the next decade.
