Mazatlan (23°N 106°W)

The Puerto de Mazatlan lies on the north-central shores of western Mexico, just east of the tip of Baja California. Meaning “Place of Deer” in Nahuatl, Mazatlan remained a small fishing village until the port expanded in the late 1990s. Now, the port is visited by cruise ships, bulk cargo and container ships and large fishing vessels.

As the shrimp capital of the world, Mazatlan distributes more than 40,000 tons of shrimp each year. In addition, Mazatlán is home to the Pacific's largest tuna cannery.

Puerto de Mazatlan's economy rests on agricultural industries like food processing, fish meal and brewing. Industrial cargoes such as rolled steel, containers and automobiles are also received at the port. Mazatlan is the fourth biggest port in Mexico, handling over 41,895 TEUs in 2021.

Mexico has coasts along the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Cortez, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Major Pacific coastal port cities include Acapulco, Chiapas, Ensenada, Manzanillo, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, Salina Cruz, Tijuana and more.

Some of the world's biggest yellowfin tuna consistently come from the southernmost area of the eastern Pacific off Baja California Sur. The high season for fishing is usually May to September.
