Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-toxic/non-hazardous, colorless liquid solution that is made up of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. DEF is used in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. DEF is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines to create a chemical reaction that converts the NOx into nitrogen and water vapor, reducing the amount of emissions released into the atmosphere.

Emissions standards have recently moved to include commercial water vessels. When the EPA passed the new emission standards in the early 2000s, the expectation was to require a reduction in the allowable amount of sulfur in marine diesel fuel by 99%.

Marine DEF, frequently referred to as AUS 40, is an aqueous high-purity urea solution at a concentration of 40% that is needed to operate converters with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) in applications with large combustion engines.
